INFORMATION ABOUT THE BOOK

Punjabi From Zero

I have put into practice an altogether new approach based on the following principles:

  • Taking the student from the familiar to the unfamiliar in gradual steps.

  • Going from the simple to the more complex in the same fashion.

  • Taking the student from concrete to the abstract – each new lesson has a small dictionary to follow up – it gives them a concrete vocabulary from which to abstract and build phrases for themselves relating to everyday situations.

  • Avoidance of rote memorization and repetitive techniques, so that successive steps are learned without any strain. Relating the Indian environment to the North American environment

Punjabi From Zero confines itself to the acquisition of basic Punjabi reading and writing skills. It is easy to follow the simple instruction in English. There are pictures and illustrations, fun to read poems and short stories, learning exercises at the end of each lesson, and all are based in the North American context.

It is the first book with English instructions published in Canada and subsidized by The Secretary of State Multiculturalism Canada

The greatest obstacle to the completion of this book was the lack of an adequate method of reproduction, print or typesetting in Punjabi. To overcome this Himmat S. Shinhat and I created our own character set which allowed us to type in Punjabi onto a computer terminal.
